Government dance role for Strictly's Arlene to help nation get fit

Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips is fronting a 'dance champions group' that will try to improve the nation’s fitness levels in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

The 66-year-old choreographer's new project comes just weeks after the BBC's decison to replace her with singer and former contestant Alesha Dixon.

Arlene will join former Strictly competitors such as Lisa Snowdon in promoting mass open-air dances.

"What I am hoping is that we are going to find enough accessible and open spaces for people to take classes and make it free and make it accessible," the former judge says.

"People will do things if they are there and they are easy, like brushing your teeth."

The appointment comes as part of the Government’s wider campaign to get the nation more active.
