Silvio Berlusconi spends 'settled night' after attack

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi spent a "settled night in hospital" after being punched in the face by an attacker, according to an Italian news agency.

The 73-year-old was assaulted following a rally in Milan. He suffered a broken nose, two broken teeth and a cut lip after being hit with a model of Milan's cathedral, which the assailant was apparently holding in his hand.

A 42-year-old man, Massimo Tartaglia, was arrested and has been charged with aggravated assault. He is reported as having a history of mental illness.

Mr Berlusconi's doctor said it would take a few weeks for his client to fully recover.

The Italian leader had to undergo a CT scan in the hospital but did not need any surgery.
