Superstar musician Madonna returned to the homeland of her adopted children, David and Mercy, both four, and planted a tree at the site of a girls' academy she plans to build.
The £10 million project in Malawi is to prepare the country's "future women leaders", explained the queen of pop.
"Growing up in a privileged life I look education for granted… but coming to Malawi has taught me a lot," said the 51-year-old.
"Seeing all the hard-working Malawaian women, who are looking after families and communities, I realise how much they deserve to be educated".
Singer Madonna arrived in the capital Lilongwe on Sunday, accompanied by all four of her children, ahead of the colourful ceremony, which was attended by 500 local people.
