'X Factor' winner Matt Cardle: 'It hasn't sunk in yet'

13 DECEMBER 2010

After his name was read out at the end of the X Factor grand final, Matt Cardle put his head in his hands and broke down in tears.

And less than 12 hours after winning the nationwide star search, the Essex-born painter and decorator said the stunning victory hadn't sunk in.

"It was so shocking that it made me numb straight away and I have not really got the feeling back yet," he told ITV morning show Daybreak.

"I am still in a bit of a spin about the whole thing.

"I said to someone earlier 'it will probably sink in next Christmas when I watch somebody else win and I say oh, I did that last year'. It is just crazy."

Matt beat Rebecca Ferguson into second while boyband One Direction came third.

After being announced as the winner of the £1 million recording contract he picked up the microphone once more to sing his winner's song – a cover of Biffy Clyro track Many Of Horror (When We Collide).

It's hotly tipped to be the Christmas number one single.

Matt was the early favourite to win, and was in fact top in the viewer's vote every week apart from one, when he came second to Mary Byrne.

The 27-year-old – who was mentored by Dannii Minogue - said on Sunday night: "Thanks from the bottom of my heart to everyone who voted for me. It feels really good to be putting a record out soon.

"To be the last man standing is just mind blowing."

Rebecca gave him a big hug after the learning the result. The Liverpool lass said: 'I'm so happy, so grateful and Matt's amazing. I'm just so happy to have got this far.

Simon Cowell said he was "gutted" for his act One Direction after they were sent home, but added: "All I can say is that this is just the beginning for these boys."

On Saturday night it was Cher who exited, coming in fourth after dueting with her mentor Cheryl Cole's pal Will-i-am.

The same night Matt duetted with Rihanna, Rebecca teamed up with Christina Aguilera and One Direction sang with Robbie Williams.
