An extremely nervous photographer sent to St Andrews on a local news story not long ago was desperately anxious not to bump into famous student Prince William - afraid that, if he did, the fearsome wrath of St James's Palace would descend upon him.
Recalling the storm of criticism that a TV crew from Prince Edward's production company Ardent experienced after dallying too long in the town, he tried to keep a low profile. Finally, misison accomplished, he headed for the nearest pub for a stiff pick-me-up. As he walked through the entrance, heavy camera equipment hanging round his neck got in the way, but he was helped out by a polite young man who held the door open for him. To his horror, he realised that the young man was a grinning Prince William.
