Morocco's leading men have gathered together for a rather unusual photoshoot. The new pictures show King Mohammed VI and his new son with the national football team, which has just returned from the Africa Nations Cup.

The athletes received a royal welcome after making their country proud by finishing second in the competition. But the real star of the shoot was little Moulay Al-Hassan, who will one day take over from his father as king.

It seems likely that he will inherit a rather more modern monarchy when the time comes for him to accede. King Mohammed's willingness to be photographed with his son is seen as part of his desire to reform the institution. He has also bucked tradition by asking his wife, Lalla Salma, to take centre stage at diplomatic meetings and state functions.

The crown prince's birth in May last year was greeted by lavish celebrations all around the country. A 21-gun salute was fired in the capital Rabat and the king also ordered the early release of nearly 10,000 inmates from the country's prisons.
