The major 2026 awards season race has kicked off with the Critics Choice Association Awards nominations, and Hamnet and One Battle After Another both scored a ton of nominations in the film categories, along withWicked: For Good, and Marty Supreme.
I can't remember the last time our Oscar nominees were all vastly different: Hamnet, a period piece; One Battle After Another, an action comedy; Sinners, a genre film; and Wicked: For Good, a blockbuster musical, have certainly made this year's race an interesting one
In the TV categories, Severance, The Pitt, and The Studio, all also had a good showing.
The Pitt's Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa, stars of what is arguably the best new TV show on screens this year, will once again vie for their TV categories after storming the Emmys this past September, while their co-star Patrick Ball also received love from the association, scoring a nod in Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
It's a good look for the HBO series, whose second series will premiere a week after the awards show.
HBO's Task, which I said would make a strong contender in next year's Emmys' race, also received nominations in Best Drama Series and Best Actor for star Mark Ruffalo, while the other newcomers were Alien: Earth and Pluribus, with Rhea Seehorn also scooping a nod for her work in the latter.
The Critics Choice Awards have become a solid indicator of Oscars success in recent years, with over 500 voting members reflecting the broader discourse, from the critical to the commercial; this past year the CCA picked Anora as its best winner, a category it would go on to scoop at the Academy Awards, while Adrien Brody, Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldaña all also won at both events.
This season, the CCA Awards have also replaced the Golden Globes as the first major awards show to give out statues and be televised, as the ceremony nabbed the Globes usual first weekend in January spot. Chelsea Handler will once again host the ceremony which will air live on E! and the USA Network at 7/6c on January, 4 2026.
