As the temperature drops to a crisp chill, we’ve got autumn on our mind. And with a new season brings a new wardrobe. Gone are the days of floaty dresses paired with sandals and we’re reintroducing our layering knits and chunky boots

The tricky part about heading into autumn is the in-between stage: the transitional wardrobe. The weather isn’t playing ball right now, some days it’s hot and jeans are an instant regret, whilst the next, we definitely should have taken a jacket as it’s completely dropped.

Versatile, lightweight pieces are indispensable during this period. Whether it's a light knit, a cute co-ord, a basic t-shirt or oversized shirt, plain styles that can be worn with an array of different outfits are key. Opting for neutral colours and tones rather than bright styles ensures that they can be styled in a number of different ways, whether it’s layering an open shirt over a racer-neck vest, or a sweater vest over a slip dress. Mixing and matching outfit combos will quickly become your go-to.

Injecting snippets of colour and prints is key to dopamine dressing in the transitional period. Either opt for a fully printed matching set or one key colour to your look as a focal point. For the maximalist, colour clashing isn’t out of your comfort zone, so bring bright hues in to brighten a gloomy day.

We’ve rounded up 10 of our favourite autumnal outfit ideas to give you some major outfit inspiration.

Waistcoats have quickly become a core staple in our everyday wardrobes. We’re loving the knitted iterations we’ve seen popping up everywhere. Dress it up with a tailored trouser, or for a more casual feel, opt for a wide-leg jean.

Suede Outerwear

With the revival of the boho trend, suede is an easy way to incorporate it into your everyday wardrobe. Outerwear has the ability to elevate any outfit, so a suede jacket ticks every box. Style it over a knitted dress or with a selvedge jean.

The ultimate transitional wardrobe item to have is the satin slip dress. Worn alone during the summer with some strappy sandals, and guide it through into your autumn wardrobe by simply layering over your favourite wide-leg jeans.

A trench coat is the capsule wardrobe staple everyone should own. It's one of those pieces you’ll own that will go with literally any look and an investment you’ll be reaching for year after year.

Double Denim

Double denim is one of those phrases that can send fear into most. However, if you pull it off correctly, it's an effortlessly stylish look. Choosing the same coloured denim or a matching set is the easiest way to wear it for a cohesive finish.

Since the skinny jeans retirement, we’ve seen an array of jean styles making their comeback. We are fully in the era of the wide-leg now and we’re embracing it. Style it with a slouchy knit or a fitted vest for a contrasting look.

In the transitional weather period, a sweater vest will be the most worn item in your wardrobe. Worn alone or as your key layered piece, its versatility knows no bounds. Go for a bright tone to inject colour into your look, or a neutral to ease yourself in.
