Oscar-winning writer-director Paul Haggis and his glamorous leading lady Charlize Theron had every reason to celebrate on Saturday night with their film, In The Valley Of Elah winning a ten-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Considered to be a big contender for the festival's top prize, it is one of two films that focus on the Iraq war, although Ontario-born Paul describes it as "more of a social study of so-called 'post-combat' stress."
Tommy Lee Jones stars in the movie as a former soldier who, together with his wife played by Susan Sarandon, work with Charlize's police detective to uncover the truth behind their son's disappearance following his tour of duty in Iraq.
The film could put another Oscar on the shelf for Paul who won in 2005 for Crash and has previously been nominated for penning Million Dollar Baby and co-writing Clint Eastwood's Letters From Iwo Jima.
