'X Factor' contestant Gamu will be deported

Gamu Nhengu – the Zimbabwean-born teenager who captured the public's imagination on X Factor has been told she must return to her home country.

The Home Office has turned down her mother's visa application, and as such Gamu must also leave the UK.

The family arrived six years ago and were allowed to stay while Gamu's mother Nokuthula Ngazana, studied at university.

They have been fighting the decision since they were first told their application to stay had been rejected.

Gamu has warned that the family, who fled President Robert Mugabe's regime, would face a "firing squad" if they returned to Zimbabwe.

But her lawyer explained that officials had counted on public statements made by the president that they would not be harmed.

[These statements are] "something which the Home Office appears to regard as reliable," he said.
