Wyclef Jean prepares to battle for president of Haiti job

Yet another entertainer has decided to make the leap from the stage to the political arena.

Former Fugees’ member Wyclef Jean has announced his candidacy for president of Haiti.

The singer, who was born in Haiti but moved to New York when he was nine years old, still holds Haitian citizenship and according to Haitian law meets all the requirements to be an eligible candidate.

Called to action after the devastating January 12 earthquake that struck the island nation, Wyclef says that his platform will run on education, job creation, instilling security into the culture, and reclaiming the country’s agricultural past.

Not new to lending a helping hand, the 37-year-old musician founded the Yéele Haiti Foundation - a charity designed to assist his countrymen through education, health, environment and community development.

The Grammy-Award winning artist also knows what to expect in a political battle. Preparing for the tumult sure to head his way, Wyclef responded: “Politics is a combat sport, so I expect nothing less than to be attacked every day.”
