The Duchess of Alba's daughter pulls out of wedding

More on the Duchess of Alba

There's been a last-minute setback for the bride in Spain's wedding of the year.

Just one day before the Duchess of Alba's big day, and when things were running smoothly, her only daughter, Eugenia Martinez de Irujo, has pulled out due to illness.

The 85-year-old grandee will marry Alfonso Diez – 24 years her junior – in what will be her third wedding.

But a short press release from the House of Alba has confirmed that Eugenia can't make it as she has chickenpox and a very high fever.

She was diagnosed with the illness on Tuesday morning, when she was already at the Dueñas Palace in Seville to attend the wedding.

Although she won't be there, her five brothers will attend the ceremony on Wednesday.

Eugenia's ex-husband, bullfighter Francisco Rivera, will also be present.

Since his 2002 divorce, he has stayed close to the duchess – who still thinks of him as a son-in-law.

The ceremony will start at 1pm and will be attended by close family and a small number of friends, including the bride's surgeon, Doctor Trujillo.
