American feminist and novelist Marilyn French dies at 79

Marilyn French, the writer who pioneered the feminist movement with her multi-million selling novel The Women's Room, has passed away in Manhattan aged 79.
 
The Brooklyn native – who beat cancer in 1992 - died on May 2 in hospital after suffering heart failure.
 
Marilyn was an academic in 1977 when The Women's Room, her first novel was published. Her aim she said was "to change the entire social and economic structure of Western civilization, to make it a feminist world."
 
The landmark book, which recounts the tale of independence of a Fifties housewife who gets divorced and goes to graduate school, has been translated into 20 languages and has sold more than 20 million copies.
 
Marilyn is survived by her son, Robert and daughter Jamie. A memorial service is being planned for her in New York in June.
