Flak-jacketed David Cameron in secret Afghan trip

Tuesday December 7, 2010

David Cameron has made a surprise visit to Afghanistan to assess the situation on the ground.

The Prime Minister stayed overnight in Camp Bastion, Helmand Province where Prince William mingled with troops just days before his engagement.

Mr Cameron thanked British soldiers for their efforts during a walkabout at the base.

And he later sent a round-robin Army fax to others stationed around the war-torn country.

While there the Conservative leader paid tribute to a British soldier killed on Sunday, in a suspected "friendly fire" incident.

During the two-day trip, he also travelled to Kabul for a meeting with President Hamid Karzai.

It has become customary for prime ministers to go on morale-boosting tours to Afghanistan ahead of Christmas.
