Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have filmed a Wild West episode of Doctor Who - in sunny Spain.

The stars, who play the Timelord and his companion Amy Pond, flew to Almeria in the south of the country to shoot scenes on its well-known desert lots - home to spaghetti westerns The Magnificent Seven and A Fistful Of Dollars, The Sun reported.

The episode, to be screened when the new series of the show returns later this year, will focus on a part-human, part-robot creature which patrols a western town in the Victorian era.

An insider told the newspaper: "Matt and Karen are really excited about the episode. Filming on the same set as a lot of western films, together with the Spanish weather, will give it an epic feel."

This will be Karen's last series of the show. The Scottish star will leave mid-way through the run in what producer Steven Moffat has promised will be "heartbreaking" scenes.
