Emotional Roger Federer scores historic French Open win

Monday June 8, 2009

It was perhaps the defining moment of Roger Federer's career at the weekend as the Swiss player stormed to victory in the French Open against Sweden's Robin Soderling.

The historic win means he equals Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles. It also puts him among five other players - including Fred Perry and Andre Agassi  - who are the only men to have won all four Grand Slam events.

"It's maybe my greatest victory," said the tennis ace, who's soon to become a dad for the first time with wife Mirka. "I think that now and until the end of my career, I can really play with my mind at peace, and no longer hear that I've never won Roland Garros."

The 27-year-old has contested every French Open since his first attempt at the title in 1999. Shedding tears as he received the trophy, he admitted the match had been an "emotional rollercoaster".
