Tom Hooper is being eyed to direct the Freddie Mercury biopic, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as the late Queen frontman.
The Oscar-winning King's Speech filmmaker is said to be in the running to take the reins on the film, which Stephen Frears was attached to direct last summer, reported Deadline.
No formal offer has been made to the British director so far.
It would mark a reunion for Tom and Sacha, following their previous collaboration in Tom's Les Miserables remake, in which the actor played cheating pub landlord Monsieur Thenardier opposite Helena Bonham Carter as his screen wife.
Producer Graham King previously hinted that Sacha may sing all the Queen songs.
"We'll see. We'll see what happens. You know, Freddie's got such a distinctive voice," he told Collider.
"Sacha sang Sweeney Todd. That was his voice. And he's got a fantastic voice as well. We haven't quite put them together yet to see the match."
