Princess Anne's husband joins top brass on local band

While his wife Princess Anne is patron of around 200 organisations, few of these positions can rival Vice-Admiral Timothy Laurence's new honorary job for their ability to add spice to dinner party conversation.

The naval commander has been invited to become president of the local brass band, based near the couple's Gatcombe Park estate.

"He won't have to play anything," explained Mike Evans, a senior euphonium player with Gloucestershire's Avening Silver Band.

"He is really only a figurehead, but it will give  us a terrific boost", he added
