IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been sent to the notorious Riker's Island prison after being denied bail.
He faces charges of attempting to rape a hotel staff member.
The French economist - who was polled as the most likely person to beat President Nicolas Sarkozy in next year's presidential election - was arrested in New York over the weekend.
Amidst fears that he would flee to France if allowed bail, the 62-year-old has instead been sent to the jail where he is awaiting trial.
