For the last few years Karl Lagerfeld's between-season collections for Chanel have centred around geographical destinations. In the past the German maestro has drawn on New York, Monte Carlo, Miami and Moscow for inspiration. The focus of his fashion radar for the Chanel 2010 cruise collection was Venice.
As dusk fell on Venice's Lido beach 'king' Karl presented a collection which included trouser and top combos incorporating sailor stripes, swimsuits and long black capes.
Models wearing 1920s-inspired wigs with silent movie-style makeup hit the boardwalk runway in classic Chanel designs which wouldn't have looked out of place in the wardrobe of Coco herself.
Karl threw in the odd whimsical note, too, accessorising black lace dresses with Venetian masks and lashings of bows and ribbons before throwing in a gold lame affair in the grand finale.
