Just a week after South Africa celebrated the closing ceremonies of a very successful World Cup, the African nation had another reason to cheer.
Golfer Louis Oosthuizen, from Mossel Bay, Western Province, swung his way to victory at the 150th anniversary Open in St Andrews.
Embracing his wife Nel-Mare and baby daughter Jana, the 27-year-old family man did not forget his roots, dedicating his win to Nelson Mandela who marked his 92nd on the same day.
“When I was walking down the 18th hole I was thinking about him and the unbelievable work he has done for my country, so happy birthday to him,” said Louis, the son of a sheep farmer.
World number one, Tiger Woods, meanwhile was left frustrated after finishing 12 shots off the lead.
Tiger has been criticised recently for his unsportsmanlike manner on the course and with fans, but the three-time Open winner has vowed to be a better player and a better person.
