Success in sight for Joanna on Gurkha residency issue

Success in sight for Joanna on Gurkha residency issue

Gordon Brown is expected to announce within days a government bill which will give all retired Gurkha soldiers the right to live in the UK.

The victory for the Nepalese soldiers, whose campaign for residency was championed by Absolutely Fabulous actress Joanna Lumley, comes after immigration officials accepted assurances from campaigners that a maximum of 10,000 Gurkhas and their family members will take up the offer.

It is far less than initial figure of 100,000 which the government anticipated.

Details of the new bill are still being finalised, but it effectively means that those Nepalese troops and their immediate families who want to settle on UK soil can do so.
