'Downton' rocker Elizabeth McGovern's stage fright

Thursday October 25, 2012

A world away from the stiff upper lip of her character the Countess of Grantham, Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern has admitted that she has to "embrace the terror" every time she performs with her band.

The actress is part of Sadie and the Hotheads, an easy listening rock group which Elizabeth herself fronts.

Currently on tour, the period drama star said: "I don't have any method except to embrace the terror, that's the only thing I can think of that I do."

"I throw myself into it somewhat like the footage of that guy skydiving from space. That correlates to me with that initial walk-up to the microphone to get into that first song, putting your arms around that feeling of terror."

Elizabeth, however, can happily seek comfort in the arms of her on screen daughter, Michelle Dockery, who has featured on the album.

The pair bonded over their music and were known to sneak off set to perform.

The star said: "There were the days when we would always be running back to my trailer to hike up our skirts and play songs, we don't do so much of that now - it's difficult because in the last season we weren't thrown together in scenes as much as we were in the first season, so we sort of got out of the habit of it," she added.

Elizabeth's album How Not To Lose Things will be released on October 29.
