A royal welcome in the hillsides of Braemar

A royal welcome in the hillsides of Braemar

Kilted Scotsmen, pipers and dancers, members of the royal family and thousands of visitors from around the world will once more converge on the Scottish village of Braemar for the annual Gathering on the first Saturday in September.

Each year, through from spring through to autumn, villages and towns across Scotland hold competitions with demonstrations of skill, strength and endurance that have their origins in clan gatherings going back as far as the eleventh century.

These Highland Games may not include the usual sports associated with the aristocracy, but that doesn't stop them being a firm favourite with the British royal family, whose affection for Scotland and things Scottish is well known.
