Comic John Bishop set to row the Channel

Tuesday February 28, 2012

John Bishop is taking to sea after completing the first leg of a gruelling charity triathlon.

The stand-up comic finished a cycle ride from Paris to Calais in the early hours, and was then attempting to row across the English Channel after just one hour of sleep.

John started his BT Sport Relief Challenge at the Eiffel Tower at 9.26am local time on Monday, heading up the Champs Elysees and negotiating cobbles around the Arc de Triomphe.

However, just an hour into the challenge, he fell off his bike while passing through the outskirts of Paris.

Despite the tumble, the comedian successfully completed the first part of his challenge - to cycle 298km to the coast in less than 24 hours, the equivalent of 60,000 pedal strokes.

For the second leg, John - who suffers from bad seasickness - will row from mainland Europe to the UK.

The comedian is hoping to raise enough money to pay for a vaccine against five deadly diseases for 250,000 children in Africa, and also to help people living tough lives in the UK.
