Happier times: In 2009, the singer took this picture of herself wearing her wedding jewellery to defy reports her relationship was on the rocks

In the face of revelations about her husband's alleged infidelities, Cheryl Cole continues to maintain a dignified silence – pushing ahead with her work commitments, including a poignant Brit Awards performance.

But while she is not discussing her private life, the ongoing removal of her wedding ring is being seen by many as a sign her marriage is in trouble.

On Wednesday, the 26-year-old was spotted flying out of London's Heathrow airport en route to Los Angeles without her £160,000 marital band, having swapped it for a large gold cocktail ring.

It came just one day after her appearance at the music bash – not attended by footballer Ashley – for which she had also removed the diamond sparkler.

Fans will no doubt be reminded of the last time she took off her wedding jewellery – in 2008 she went several months without wearing it in light of Ashley's alleged infidelities.

But it is being reported that this time Cheryl has had enough.

Friends of the singer have told the Daily Mail that when she returns from America next week – she is recording extra tracks with the Black Eyed Peas –  the star will seek to end her three-and-a-half-year marriage.

"She loves Ashley, he is the love of her life, but there is only so much she will take," one source said.

"Cheryl is exhausted with it all…They will split within weeks."

But the Sun reports that the brunette beauty will not move out of the couple's Surrey home and that she just "needs a break from everything".

"She still loves Ashley and wants to save their marriage, but she's becoming increasingly tired of being humiliated and betrayed in front of millions of people," one pal is quoted as saying.
