Anyone with children will probably be familiar with Sarah Ferguson's books following the adventures of Budgie the little helicopter. The cute yellow chopper and his flying friends have proven very popular with youngsters both in Britain and the US. What most people don't realise, however, is that Budgie owes his existence to Sarah's real-life adventures. She got the inspiration for the character while training as a pilot in the Royal Navy. Her ex-husband Andrew has meanwhile had some rather more perilous piloting exploits. The Duke Of York served with the Royal Navy, also as a helicopter pilot, during the Falklands War, attached to the HMS Invincible. He famously flew as a so-called "Exocet decoy" to protect warships from missile attack as well as taking part in combat, casualty evacuation and search-and-rescue missions. |
