Rustle up a traditional Italian feast

31 AUGUST 2012

Gorgeous Italian-Welsh cook Michela Chiappa has been fronting the campaign to introduce authentic techniques to the British home.

And cooking has never seemed so effortless, thanks to Channel 4's latest TV show Simply Italian.

Don't be put off by lack of time. Meals are all about including the family so, like traditional Italian feasts, pull in your team to give you a hand.

The key to the comforting home touch of Italian cuisine is the effort and love put into handling your produce.

Spruce up tomatoes and enliven pasta with vital ingredients from your larder. These should include a selection of fresh herbs, onions and garlic, and beautifully cured meats such as prosciutto or pancetta.

Try the distinctively grainy texture of Grana Padano cheese to give depth to any dish. Remember to save the rinds and add to soups or sauces.

Olive oil is absolutely essential. Coveted by the likes of Jamie Oliver, make sure this is extra virgin. You'll be surprised by the difference quality can make.

Rustic yet beautiful, the variety of colour in Italian ingredients ensure that the dishes at your table are irresistibly tempting.

Here are our favourite quintessentially Italian dishes:

Prosciutto di San Daniele with caramelised fig jam on crostini

Braised savoy cabbage leaves stuffed with Prosciutto di San Daniele and Grana Padano Cheese

Roasted pumpkin salad with slices of Prosciutto San di Daniele, shavings of Grana Padano Cheese and red onion

Carbonara with Prosciutto di San Daniele and Grana Padano Cheese
