A roll-call of British stars met up with over 2,000 members of the cinema-going public on Thursday when silver screen legend Sir John Mills was honoured in London. Peter O'Toole, Stephen Fry, Sir Cliff Richard and Sir Michael Caine were among those who went along to pay tribute to the star, who passed away two months ago at the age of 97.
Sir Richard Attenborough, one of the Oscar winner's closest friends, was overcome by emotion as he delivered the eulogy in Trafalgar Square's St Martin-in-the-Fields Church. "I shall miss his guidance, his caring and his unfailing sense of humour," said the veteran actor as his eyes welled up with tears. "I loved him very much."
Dame Judi Dench meanwhile remembered his mischievous sense of humour, leaving the congregation in stitches when she recalled his penchant for "goosing" her. "He was the most talented, adorable, charming – and naughtiest man I have ever known," she revealed.
Over the course of his 60-year career Sir John appeared in over 100 movies, including such classics as Ryan's Daughter, Ice-Cold In Alex and The Young Mr Pitt. He passed away at his home in Denham, Buckinghamshire, on April 23 following a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary Hayley Bell and their three children Juliet, Hayley and Jonathan. |
