Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik and his fiancée Mary Donaldson were guests of honour at a gala dinner in Christiansborg Palace on Tuesday. The happy couple, who will walk down the aisle on Friday, were congratulated by 375 of the country's most important political leaders and dignitaries at the glitzy event.

And as the build-up to their big day hits fever pitch, Mary has given a candid interview to a Danish newspaper about her romance with the prince. Speaking to the popular daily Politiken, the pretty Australian revealed her fears that the royal family would deem her unsuitable.

The 32-year-old said her first meeting with Queen Margrethe, in April 2002, was the biggest challenge. "It had to go well," she said. "Protocol is something quite new to me. It isn't something you normally experience in Australia…

"If it had gone horribly wrong, I think we would have tried to understand what could be so wrong about me. Maybe I would have tried to discuss it with the family and tried to show them that I was a nice and good person."

Mary goes on to say that if she had failed to win over Frederik's parents, she would have ended the romance rather than ask him to abdicate. But thankfully she hasn't had to face that decision, and now she's looking forward to starting a family with her royal beau. "He has a warm, warm heart, he is loyal and honest," she says of her fiancé.

In the interview the Tasmanian-born former marketing executive also mentioned her desire to start a family with her prince, who she will wed this Friday.
