Though the likes of Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen and Rita Ora rely on the use of hair extensions to make their locks look longer, not everybody has an A-list budget when it comes to their hair. Instead, we'd like to know the tips and tricks to help our hair grow longer, and what we can do to promote a healthy head of hair. We spoke to Trichologist Sally-Ann Tarver, from The Cotswold Trichology Centre and Theradome, to get some answers. "Hair grows approximately 1-1.5cm per month, but afro-Caribbean hair grows slower, at around 5mm per month and Asian hair grows the fastest at up to 2cm per month," she told us.

"Sunlight speeds the rate of hair (and nail) growth considerably – you may have noticed your haircut and colour grows out faster after a holiday abroad." But what if we're not lucky enough to live in sunnier climes and our next holiday is a long way off? Sally suggests thinking about your diet as a way to help your hair out. "A diet low in protein can reduce the speed of growth," she said, before warning: "but a high protein diet cannot accelerate the growth rate beyond that of your normal healthy level."

Sally's other suggestions include scalp massage, which stimulates blood flow to follicles, though make sure to use oil or scalp conditioner as friction may cause you to lose hair rather than gain it. And hanging you head upside down for five to 10 minutes is also a speedy way to get blood flowing. "This is an age-old suggestion for improving hair that many swear by, although it takes dedication and effort to see any results," she added.
