Think divine Dorset crab cacio e pepe, succulent Suffolk lamb, and a Chateaubriand perfect for sharing. Plus, expect a daily rotation of pub snacks from oysters with homemade hot sauce to parmesan churros and a classic scotch egg. If you ask us, it doesn't get better than a crisp glass of wine and a selection of the 'On toast' offering, including tomato and soft ricotta and a punchy Welsh rarebit.

Venture into Six By Nico’s culinary wonderland

"Curiouser and curiouser," said Alice – a phrase that Lewis Carroll’s most famous character might well have repeated if presented with Six By Nico’s latest tasting menu, inspired by the Mad Hatter’s tea party. But if the bustling restaurant is anything to go by, humming with energy even on a rainy Tuesday night, the wildly inventive concept is a winning one.

Six By Nico’s Alice-inspired tasting menu will take you to Wonderland

Nestled in the heart of Charlotte Street in London’s Fitzrovia, Six By Nico – one of 12 outposts across the UK – resembles the type of Victorian gentlemen’s club that would have made Sherlock Holmes proud, replete with oak panelling, flourishing greenery and leather banquettes. But the chess-style chequerboard floor sets the scene for the Alice theme, and bagging a seat near the chefs will further whet your appetite, as the sleek, mustard-tiled open kitchen turns out endless miniature delights.

Kicking things off is Eat Me! Drink Me! – an appetiser featuring cheddar biscuits with mushroom consommé and the luxe touch of summer truffle, accompanied by a piquant hot beverage of lemon thyme containing fungi, the current go-to in wellness drinks.

First up on the main menu is We’re All Mad Here, a brown butter doughnut with crispy onions – use the warm sourdough to mop up the moreish sauces – followed by Caterpillar Secret Garden, a delightful arrangement involving barbecued hispi cabbage and potato terrine.

A scarlet jus is drizzled over goat’s cheese parfait for Paint the Roses Red, followed by Sunny Side Upside Down, a miniature fry-up that comes with delicious fish for non-carnivores (and, excitingly, an edible handwritten menu).

Off with His Head cleanses the palate with chunky celeriac and crisp fennel before the showstopping dessert course – Jam First, Logic Later, which includes breakfast tea ganache, burnt toast delice and Jammie Dodgers, presented in a miniature chest on a bed of stones that smoke when red liquid from a glass teapot is poured over them.

Our informative, friendly waiter explains not only each course, but also its accompanying drink; wine pairings (cocktails are also available) are thoughtfully done, from an apple-bright drop that complements the freshness of the goat’s cheese to a strawberry-flavoured dessert wine to quaff with your Dodgers.

Alice is in the building until 24 August, so beat the rush and book your adventure in Wonderland now. It’s time to go down the rabbit hole – and falling into one has never been quite so much fun.

Enjoy pie, stout and history at The Newman Arms

If you love a good pie and learning about London's fascinating past is up your street, I recommend you pay a visit to the newly restored Newman Arms pub in Fitzrovia.

The Newman Arms

Originally built in 1730, the building has seen many guises in its time, from candlemakers, to a blacksmiths and a pub from 1860. Indeed, Both Dylan Thomas and George Orwell were once regulars, with Orwell famously using the pub as inspiration for the 'Proles Pub' in his 1949 masterpiece 1984.

Now reopened with its character intact and the original hanging sign, the pub is a great spot for an evening out.

The iconic pie room upstairs is a must-visit, serving a selection of traditional, sustainably sourced pies, crafted from organic ingredients from English farmers. Choose from an aged beef shin pie, fisherman's pie, chicken ham hock and creamed leek pie, amongst others. I can confirm the beef shin pie was delicious!

Get fully in the old-London spirit with the pub's classic Black Velvet drink - half a Murphy’s Stout and a glass of Crémant - rumoured to have been the drink of Winston Churchill when he patronised the pub.

Satisfy your hunger with Nikkei cuisine at Chotto Matte

Tucked away in Soho is a hidden gem serving some of the most incredible Japanese Peruvian fusion food you've ever tasted – enter Chotto Matte.

© Chotto Matte

A welcome retreat from the beating summer heat, the moody interiors feature plush red velvet seats you can sink into while enjoying the perfect view of the bartender whipping up watermelon margaritas.

With a menu crafted with the idea of sharing small plates, I wasn't wasting any time sampling as many as I could on the menu. I started with the guacamole and tomato salsa, scooping it onto a jumbo Parmesan cracker to curb my hunger while I waited for the main event.

Slow-braised crispy pork belly, wagyu brioche sliders with truffled cheese, and spicy tuna crispy sushi were just some of the varied dishes I sampled, with each one even better than the last. My favourite? If you have nothing else, make sure you try the seabass ceviche with sweet potato and Peruvian corn. It's light, citrus taste is reason alone for me to return.

Granted, the weekday lunch was very quiet, but I can imagine the evenings have back-to-back bookings with delectable cocktails and even resident DJs on offer.

Seek shelter at Mama Shelter

There’s no shortage of trendy places to come together over food and drink in Shoreditch but Mama Shelter could possibly be the coolest of the bunch.

It’s also something of a one-stop-shop for your entertainment needs being a hotel, restaurant and karaoke bar rolled into one.

My friends and I strolled into the premises on a meteorologically capricious Saturday afternoon and immediately found ourselves transported into a world of patterned ceilings and kiss-mouth covered stairs. For fans of the retro, various TV screens display (silently) an array of cult comedy and cartoon classics, including Mrs Doubtfire, Tom and Jerry, and 3rd Rock From the Sun.

The next test was whether the food and drink would live up to the decor. We weren’t disappointed. We opted for an array of small plates, a description which proved something of a misnomer given the mighty punch they packed.

If, like me, grapes and focaccia were not a combination you had envisaged working in harmony, then Mama Shelter will make you think again. The Suya chicken wings paired with pickled onions and a scotch bonnet and plantain ketchup will also linger long in the memory.

At the time they also lingered with a degree of heat on the tongue so happily the venue’s June by G’Vine summer cocktail range (available until the end of August) acted as a coolant. My favourite was the mango and passion fruit margarita but you may like the tropical June, so summery I felt like I should have shown my passport before quaffing it. Several more ebullient mixes are available, and all can be enjoyed for bargain prices during hotel happy hour between 4pm and 7pm.

After our feast came to an end, we headed out into the Shoreditch gloaming knowing should we ever be in the area again, we would certainly be seeking shelter at Mama…

Classic French style at Colbert

What better way to mark the first state visit by a French leader in 17 years than by decamping to a corner of Sloane Square that will forever be Paris? While Monsieur Macron was being welcomed to Windsor Castle with a lemon-curd cocktail, we took it upon ourselves to sample the rather more appealing white-port version at Colbert, the Wolseley group’s popular outpost in this well-heeled part of town.

© MINNA ROSSI
Colbert dressed for summer by the luxury textile brand Manuel Canovas

It’s a bastion of classic French style, from its red leather banquettes to the black-and-white chequerboard floor, and the 270-degree views mean you can people-watch right around Sloane Square as movers and shakers flock to upmarket shops, the renowned concert venue Cadogan Hall and the Royal Court next door.

Indeed, in a mark of how well the restaurant blends into its surroundings, posters from the theatre’s classic productions hang alongside characterful advertisements for Jacques Tati’s films. And this summer’s collaboration with the luxury textile brand Manuel Canovas, celebrating Chelsea in Bloom, adds another touch of class, adorning the terrace with striking floral awnings and seat coverings in richly patterned weaves.

From the moment you step through the door, confronted by gigantic loaves emblazoned with Colbert’s name, you know you’re in for a good meal, and their mini baguettes with salted butter make for a fine start. If it’s hot and you’re in need of refreshment, follow up the aforementioned cocktail with a glass or two of Whispering Angel rosé.

Summery starters include succulent Severn & Wye smoked salmon with moreish seeded toast, or a coolly beautiful celeriac remoulade, in which endless thin strips of the vegetable have somehow been magicked into the shape of a ball of wool.

Next, try the outrageous sea trout, Barbie-pink and luxuriating on both a creamy sauce and a bed of petit pois. The hefty cannon of lamb is also worth a try, and don’t miss out on the superb pommes frites, served in a stylish silver bucket.

If you arrived in any doubt that Colbert would leave you well fed, the proof is in the outrageous puddings. Accept the challenge of their banana split, topped with cream, smothered in chocolate sauce and so big that you only discover it contains huge scoops of ice cream when you’re halfway through. Alternatively, kid yourself that you’re choosing the lighter option in the form of some decadent ice-cream profiteroles (naturally, also with chocolate sauce).

And if you have a food allergy or intolerance, you’re in safe hands, with the waiting staff proving remarkably thoughtful and informative when it comes to checking the precise ingredients of each dish.

Make the most of the long summer evenings by arriving while the sun’s still shining, then linger into the evening as the lighting grows progressively more golden and the lively cafe chatter gives way to a romantic mood. Monsieur Macron may have enjoyed his state banquet, but we have a sneaky feeling that stylish Madame Brigitte might have preferred Colbert.

Get batting and fill up on Indian street food courtesy of Sixes Party Cricket and Kricket

Summer means hello to endless hours of cricket on the TV, but if you feel like venturing out for your own casual bat, then this is the place for you.

© Sixes
Get batting and fill up on Indian street food courtesy of Sixes Party Cricket and Kricket

And what’s even better is that now you can enjoy a top-notch Indian street food feast there as well. Sixes Party Cricket has teamed up with Kricket, one of the UK’s favourite Indian restaurant groups, so I took my sport-mad housemate to check it out.

I figured if I embarrassed myself with my sub-par cricket skills, I could show off my real talent of eating. Sipping on a Sixes Pale Ale that perfectly combines beers from the big cricket nations (the UK, Australia, South Africa, India), you wouldn’t suspect the flagship bar in Fulham to be a chain. The cosy, warm vibes however, were instantly destroyed when our competitive natures came out in the batting cages.

Whether you’re a total beginner like me or reckon you can play at a pro level, it’s a fun time for all. When it comes to the new menu, though, we were keen to sample everything.

If you’re someone who can never decide what to order, I’d recommend the £36 tasting menu where you can mix and match street food dishes and curries served with tarka dal, pilau rice and papad. Whilst I’m a vegetarian, my carnivorous pal was taken with the signature Keralan fried chicken that’s proved to be a favourite.

However, my stand-outs had to be the authentic samosa chaat and the silky Keralan prawn curry that was packed with flavour. If I hadn’t been in public, that plate would’ve been licked clean.

Have a spot of lunch at Novikov Asian

Although I have always thought of Novikov as a very gorgeous place to have dinner for a special occasion, I had never considered that the restaurant offers a fantastic lunch menu for a slightly more low-key visit to the Mayfair restaurant - albeit still with the restaurant's incredible flavours and attention to detail - especially when it comes to their sushi menu.

However, their Hikari lunch is not only reasonably priced at £55 a head for a three-course meal, but has some amazing offerings, including wagyu racos, yuzu tuna and an incredible sweet and sour chicken, just to name a few. For seafood fans, I'd also recommend trying to seabass fillet - divine! For a supplement, you can also pick from an array of tasty sides, with baby bok choy always being my top pick! And if you still have room after all of that, get on the Japanese mochi ice cream trend with a selection of four flavours. Enjoy!

Transport yourself to Provence at Courtyard Wine Cellars’ Roseblood Courtyard Summer Terrace

As someone who regularly entertains overseas visitors, I’m always on the lookout for somewhere that’s tourist-friendly but with a little je ne sais quoi.

Transport yourself to Provence

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden in Floral Court, I took one of my best friends from Australia to Courtyard Wine Cellars’ Roseblood Courtyard Summer Terrace for a glass of crisp rosé in the London sunshine.

Decked out with greenery and soft pink detailing, the terrace is inspired by the Garden of Eden at Château d’Estoublon and is a perfect girly catch-up spot for after work or pre-theatre drinks. As we kicked back with a glass of Roseblood rosé and some roasted nuts, it felt rather serene despite being in one of the capital’s busiest locations.

Don’t just have a glass on the terrace though; head back to the underground Courtyard Wine Cellars like we did to sample more wines that aren’t of the rosé variety. As central London's largest wine bar, there are 1,000 to choose from, but the attentive staff will be able to find your perfect tipple. We sipped on champagne, chablis, and a chilled pinot noir served up alongside a charcuterie board groaning with an array of cheeses and cured meats.

Wine lovers, be sure to check out this special summery location, but just be sure to get in before 12 September.

Indulge in NAC's sweetest treat

Nestled on North Audley Street in the heart of Mayfair, NAC is a chic bistro offering a delectable array of modern French cuisine. Step inside to discover banquette seating and marble-topped tables set against whitewashed brick walls. Downstairs, a wood-panelled cocktail lounge adds a modern twist with baby pink walls and plush turquoise velvet seating. The restaurant also features a sophisticated front terrace that's perfect for al fresco dining or a quick stop to indulge in one of NAC’s famously irresistible cookies – but more on those later.

NAC's cookies

Now onto the food – the restaurant offers an array for delicious small plates that are great for sharing. Their Flamed Aubergine, Miso, Crispy Rice, Greek Yogurt Torched dish is one of a kind with its sweet yet smokey flavour. The Kale & Cabbage, Parmigiano, Pine Nuts, Golden Raisins Salad with Honey Za'atar dressing is my favourite savoury dish on the menu – quite the statement for something green. But the combination of salty cheese, sweet raisins, and the juicy richness of the dressing makes it the perfect companion to a protein. Pro tip: you can order a larger portion during lunch, paired with your choice of protein. I always go for the sumac chicken.

For mains, the Truffle Burger – layered with Monterey Jack and rich truffle mayo – is irresistibly mouthwatering. Equally tempting is the Rigatoni Alla Vodka, with just a hint of chilli to deliver the ideal touch of heat for a well-balanced, spiced palate. I always double down on the truffle with a side of the Truffled Mac & Cheese – indulgently rich and full of flavour.

But the undisputed star of the show is NAC’s infamous Crushed Milk Chocolate Cookies served with Frosties soft serve. It’s hands down my favourite dessert in London – and as someone with a serious sweet tooth, that’s saying something. The cookies are gooey and warm while the Frosties sprinkled on top offer a delicious crunch.

The Biltmore Mayfair

I recently treated myself to The Biltmore Mayfair's new London Meets Dubai Afternoon Tea, and honestly it was pure magic. Served in the hotel Foliage Lounge, the experience centres around the Pistachio Dusk Dubai Chocolate Cake, a rich creation layering velvety Jivara milk chocolate mousse with crispy pistachio and chocolate sugar dough.

The savoury bites were beautifully done, with their Hereford Roast Beef with celeriac remoulade and grilled Mediterranean vegetables layered with beetroot hummus sandwiches. The sweet course was a showstopper. Alongside the signature Dubai Chocolate Cake, guests will discover The Lavender Oasis, a lemon posset topped with lavender jelly; Rose of the Emirati, vanilla sponge infused with rose and raspberry ganache; and The Palm Purse, an architectural almond and lime frangipane finished with strawberry gel and vanilla ganache.

I chose a floral black tea from The Rare Tea Company. And yes, I couldn't resist having a delightful array of warm scones with clotted cream, fruit jam and a dallop of honey.  Highly recommend it if you're craving something elegant, uplifting and delicious.

Go full French at Soutine

With its handsome Victorian houses and the sounds of cricket drifting over from Lord’s, St John’s Wood offers a classic slice of English life – but if it’s the quintessential French dining experience you’re after, you could do a lot worse than Soutine.

© Soutine
Olivia Sewell’s tableware brings a summery touch to Soutine

This classy brasserie, just a stone’s throw from Regent's Park, is owned by the group that runs London classic The Wolseley and cult favourite Brasserie Zédel – and it shows. Sophisticated lighting, filtered through elegant fringed shades, casts a soft amber glow on the wood panelling and brown leather seats, creating a romantic ambience at any time of night.

Past the pavement tables and the relaxed café-style area at the front, the seamless blend of French chic and local heritage continues into the restaurant, where the stylish Art Deco-style glass in the ceiling is juxtaposed with the paintings of great English cricketers behind the banquettes.

Even the toilets are blessed with exquisite William Morris-patterned tiles, while the dining tables are perfectly positioned for intimacy and privacy – but the layout retains the restaurant’s buzz, and there’s a blessed reprieve from background Muzak, too.

Seeing as though it’s summer, let the bartender start you off with Soutine’s G&T, an elevated blend of Tanqueray No. 10 and Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic, garnished with rosemary and grapefruit.

Equally refreshing is a classic prawn cocktail that boasts some bonus juicy langoustines, and a tian of Dorset crab made succulent by avocado paste and tiny mango cubes.

After a meaty monkfish brochette or a succulent rib-eye steak, washed down with a glass of Whispering Angel rosé, there’s just enough room for a zingy lemon tart or a huge coupe of three different ice creams (accompanied by both Chantilly cream and butterscotch sauce, because why the heck not?).

And if you visit during this summer’s collaboration with the British artist and illustrator Olivia Sewell, everything will taste that little bit more delicious when it’s served on Soutine’s terrace, complemented by specially crafted tableware adorned with her striking, colourful designs.

Service is excellent, and of the type that, sadly, has been vanishingly rare since Covid-19 – genuinely friendly, informative, always on hand when you need help and leaving you in peace when you don't. Thanks to this warm welcome, three hours disappear in a flash. Prepare to be bowled over by Soutine.

Ochre is situated inside the National Gallery

Inside the National Gallery away from the hustle and bustle of Trafalgar Square, a calm elegance washed over us as soon as we walked in. With its soft wooden furnishing and earthy tones, the interiors perfectly balance traditional sophistication and cool modernity that the capital city is known for.

As for what was on the menu, we had to sample Ochre’s famed martinis which the bar staff will make just to your liking be it with gin or vodka, dirty or dry. We forgot how strong martinis can be so were thankful for the moreish small plates on offer. The silky chicken liver pate came highly recommended for good reason, whilst I wolfed down the smoked salmon with whipped ricotta and horseradish on toast far too quickly. Become a Pyro-maniac

Aptly, it was a scorching day when my wife and I lunched at London’s ‘hottest’ new restaurant, Pyro

© Pyro
I dined at Pyro

Way before marvelling at the food and drink, you’ll be marvelling at the premises which appear to have been transposed directly from a Greek beach into the heart of the capital. In such a setting, average food would likely go down well but Pyro doesn’t do average, it does ambrosial - unsurprising given the Michelin-starred credentials of Pyro’s head chef, Yiannis Mexis.

We opted for the set menu and if you do likewise, come with empty stomachs and plenty of time. Your digestive system will thank you!

My personal highlights were the sea bream crudo, presented on the bream itself which in turn was placed on on a plate of ice (a nod to Greek custom), and the melt-in-the-mouth alder-wood fired Dorset lamb with accompanying lamb fat flatbreads.

As is the way with good food, it’s the freshness of the ingredients rather than the complexity of the recipe that makes for a truly memorable dish. As such, even the side dishes deserve a special mention. A lettuce salad came colourfully decorated in pomegranate seeds and coolly dressed in a cucumber and feta sauce, while a tzatziki and black olive oil dip was a refreshing counterpoint to a molten potato pita.

By the time we got to the dessert, our stomachs were on the point of rebellion yet there was no way my mocha-loving wife was turning away the Greek mocha ice cream.

All this and I am yet to mention the cocktails and wines which saw us boozily through the culinary bombardment. Our favourite was the Midas cocktail - a dangerous combination of Apperol and tequila by Pyro’s cocktail maestro, Ana Reznik.

At the meal’s end, we staggered out of the restaurant with no intention of starting any fires but Pyro-maniacs nonetheless. If you come and eat at Pyro this July, I guarantee you will be one too…

Tucked just behind the bustle of High Holborn, this characterful, female-led spot offers a no-fuss, all-flavour experience, the kind of place that doesn’t shout about itself, but earns a loyal following all the same.

Deliciousness served up at The Bountiful Cow in Holborn.

On a recent visit, I shared the Surf ‘N’ Turf for Two, a generous spread of sirloin and rump steak, garlic prawns, hand-cut chips and onion rings, the kind of dinner that turns into a long, satisfying evening. Everything was spot on: the steaks grilled just-so, the prawns buttery and tender, and the onion rings crisp without being greasy. There’s nothing flashy here, just really well-sourced meat, cooked with quiet confidence.

The setting is just as charming, think 1960s booth seating, film posters, and a friendly crowd of regulars at the bar. It's easy to see why this little gem has stood the test of time. Come hungry, come curious, and maybe bring someone to share that surf and turf with.

A London show replete with special effects, a stellar cast and creative costumes usually means a West End berth. Not always though. Curiouser and curiouser, I hear you say? Well let me elucidate for Marylebone Theatre’s new production of Alice in Wonderland boasts all three facets, and proves once again that there’s theatrical life outside of the capital’s theatre district.

On opening night, my family and I went down the rabbit hole with Alice and Lewis Carroll’s wondrous array of characters for 60 minutes of delightful absurdity which succeed in breathing life anew into the well-known tale.

Without offering too much by way of spoilers, the staging of the famous scene where Alice's tears increase in volume to tsunami-like proportions is one of the simplest yet most innovative pieces of theatre I have seen in a long time. Similarly, the puppets which bring Carroll’s eccentric assemblage to life are simply marvellous. Our favourite was the Cheshire Cat, its smile given suitable iridescence by light bulb-powered teeth…

In a world of productions with seemingly limitless budgets, this little gem serves as a timely reminder that even something as ineffable as the human imagination can be effectively recreated in a small space like the Marylebone Theatre.

The show is advertised as being suitable for over fives but the short run time and smorgasbord of cartoonish characters on display mean it is probably fine for any child over three.

Alice in Wonderland is running until 31 August and tickets are fast selling out. To get yours visit Marylebone Theatre’s website here. You really mustn’t be late.

Go on an exciting interactive adventure at SEA LIFE London Aquarium

The London Aquarium is always a must-see during any trip to the capital or the school holidays, and its new Animal Crossing: New Horizons experience brings a new dimension to your visit.

For the first time in the UK, the life simulation game has teamed up with SEA LIFE UK for a new live, interactive experience.

The event is both fun and educational as guests get to meet characters such as Tom Nook, Aurora and Octavian alongside sea creatures, including colourful shoals of fish, sharks and green sea turtles.

Older kids will love meeting the real-life characters and filling in the quiz as they make their way through the different sections of the aquarium, while younger guests, like my three-year-old son, enjoyed collecting the different character stamps along the way.

One of the highlights, where we could have spent hours, is the aquarium's underwater tunnel, and we marvelled at the marine life swimming over our heads as our son excitedly pointed out the different species.

The event is running at SEA LIFE London Aquarium until 27 July 2025 and is included with all entry tickets.

If you miss the London experience, you can also catch it at SEA LIFE Chessington World of Adventures from 1 to 31 August.

Watch your favourite movies with stunning views of the city

Since moving to London, one of my absolute favourite spots to take friends or even a cute date night is the Rooftop Film Club in Peckham.

This view with a drink in hand is very 'London summer'

So far this year, I've watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cozied up with a blanket and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days as part of the summer season.

To add even more summer vibes, Bussey Rooftop Bar can deliver all your food and drinks safely to your seat, so you don't miss any of the film.

On Sunday, I'm so excited to watch the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final on the big screen, and I know it will be a special event. Coming up, they even have a special screening of Wicked on the 28th July, which I can imagine will be even more magical under the stars. Plus, you can 'hold space' by selecting a ticket, which guarantees the space next to them is held, and you can enjoy plenty of room to enjoy the musical!

Tickets start from £14 for adults and £8 for kids.
