Europe’s most stylish holidays

Today there are all manner of different holidays to be taken, from adventurous trips to far-flung places to the more traditional beach holidays that even a cynic can appreciate. However, with so many options out there it can sometimes feel safer to stick to what we know.

Nothing brings fresh perspective like mixing things up a bit, and if you are feeling uninspired about your holidays then why not let Europe’s indubitable sense of chic welcome you, with a trip to one of its many stylish destinations.

In 2012 holidays prices will be as competitive as ever, which means that your imagination (and that copy of HELLO!) is all you need to fly out to one of Europe’s many fashionable idylls. Italian elegance, French couture and stylish Portuguese living are just some of the experiences to be sampled.

Italy is indisputably the fashion house of Europe, home to the likes of Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace. And while Milan is home to Fashion Week, you need only a glimpse of the capital to witness true style. Weekend breaks to Rome are the perfect way to immerse yourself in the history, charm and of course, shopping, of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

It would not be right to leave without seeing St. Peter’s Square and taking the chance to indulge in the magnificence of the Colosseum, but once you have had your fill of camera flashes and sandals over socks it is time to move on.

Street markets like the Porta Portese are a fantastic place to find fashionable knick-knacks and Nuyorica is the place to shop for contemporary chic. After a long day’s walking (read: shopping) there is no more stylish way to watch the sunset than with a gentle stroll along the banks of the Tiber.

Paris has its own chic credentials and a history that has always welcomed style from the days of the Left Bank to the plethora of art galleries that call it home today. Only a short flight away and with the wonders of the Louvre and the Musee d’art Moderne to explore, Paris is a must for those looking for more than sun and sea.

The Triangle d’Or is the place to find the most famous brands but for the adventurous, a trip to the old Jewish quarter is recommended. Mingle with the contemporary Parisian bohemians and sample some of the city’s quaintest restaurants.

If the idea of a city holiday feels too much like normal life and not enough like a holiday then there is always a solution to be found. Holidays in the Algarve combine the luxuries of year round sun and warm sea with the chance to soak up the region’s culture.

Portugal’s south is ringed by some of Europe’s most picturesque coastline but it is also famous for its pottery and ceramics. So, you can explore the craft shops of the unspoiled villages, sample the delicious local produce and enjoy the excellent sandy beaches all on the same holiday.

With limited leisure time available to most of us, our holiday can feel like the most important time of the year. A stylish holiday won’t just leave you feeling refreshed but can often have an inspirational effect. Whether that is down to soaking up the culture, seeing the different sights or just the pure retail therapy of it all, everyone should give it a go.
