The Princess of Wales has a wardrobe brimming with fabulous classic pieces that support her famously timeless style ethos. Be it a blazer, a statement coat, or a boxy handbag, the royal never has a day off from looking polished.

One fashion trend that she adheres to that may sound dated but is actually super current right now is 'old lady chic'.

If you haven't heard of this trend, it's all about embracing enduring fashion trends that your grandmother may have stepped out in many years ago. Think cardigans, pleated skirts, and tailored trousers. This trend is all about comfort and modesty, featuring formal items like silk blouses, knitwear, and midi-length dresses. As a fashion editor who has been writing about style for over fifteen years, I think it's clear to see that Prince William's wife has a revolving wardrobe loaded with all of these items.

Kate's outfits are both vintage yet modern

Fashion editor and stylist Matilda Stanley agrees. "Kate has such a signature look; whether she is on the red carpet or doing a royal visit, the Princess looks polished at all times, and her elegant outfits always manage to bridge perfectly between vintage and modern. It's a clever styling trick, and Kate's choice of 'old lady' outfit rules means that her looks appeal to fashion fans of all ages."

Matching her handbags with her clothes

"Kate regularly matches her bag to her outfit, and she will find a box clutch or a top-handled piece in the same hue as her clothing," explains Matilda. "A lot of A-listers will avoid the matchy-matchy route and instead use their bag to add some clashing colour or print to their look, but Kate manages to show it off beautifully. Her expert pairings create a colour-drenched effect that is both flattering and bold," the stylist explains.

A great example of this is back in 2022, when Kate coordinated her blue Emilia Wickstead checked dress with her Mulberry bag, which featured a similar hue.

The coat dress

"A real go-to for the royal ladies is the coat dress, which is often seen as a little frumpy or outdated, but Kate regularly pulls off the risky piece with plenty of 'wow' factor," Matilda muses. "The key to keeping this retro-style outfit looking chic is to opt for designs with a structured shape and definition like a nipped-in waist and flared skirt, and Kate will often complete her look with a pair of shiny heels and some oversized jewels, which work well to bring a contemporary spin to her outfit."

Much of Kate's jewellery is from the royal vault

Antique jewellery

Vintage jewellery is really having a moment right now, and has fast replaced the subtle, quiet luxury jewellery trend of 2025. There is just something about wearing an item that is encased with history, that gives a unique spin to any look. We all know that Kate loves jewellery like this; she's renowned for her love of extravagant jewels embedded in tradition. From diamond drop earrings belonging to the late Queen Elizabeth, to her oval-cut sapphire engagement ring that belonged to her mother-in-law, the late Princess Diana, Kate knows that unique items like this will always look timeless.

Granny knits

Knitted separates have grandma written all over them, and Kate has been a longtime lover of beautifully made, woollen items. As recently as last month, Kate paid a visit to the National Curling Academy in Stirling ahead of the Winter Olympic Games, wearing a grandma-core waistcoat featuring a Fair Isle-style heart design. The soft woollen number was styled over a roll-neck jumper by Zara and teamed with a black A-line skirt and flat boots from Tod's. The nostalgic piece was feminine yet cosy, and we're sure she will bring it out, season after season.

The royal has always loved the Pillbox hat

Pillbox hats

The pillbox hat may be loved by content creators in 2026, but it was originally worn by American First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, back in the 60s. One of the smallest formal hats on the market, it has no brim and sits smartly at the back of the head. Head Millinery Designer at Lock & Co, Awon Golding, previously told HELLO! that the iconic style "gives a glamorous nod to traditional millinery, whilst also adding a romantic touch to any modern outfit."

Kate has a plethora of these hats, and they always give her outfit a vintage feel that oozes elegance. You know your grandmother has one of these nestled in her wardrobe somewhere.
