Queen Margrethe II of Denmark ascended the throne on 14 January 1972 following the death of her father, King Frederick IX. She was proclaimed Queen the day after from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.

On 8 January 2011, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary welcomed twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. The Prince was born 26 minutes before his sister.
In May 2009, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie had a third son, Count Henrik. On 24 January 2012, they welcomed their first daughter, Countess Athena.
