Cilla Black had a date with glory at the weekend when she was honoured with a lifetime achievement award. The much-loved entertainer, who has enjoyed a four-decade career in showbusiness, was presented with the trophy at the Women In Film And Television Awards in London.
"Well yippee! It's really, really great," enthused the former pop star. "Forty-one years in showbusiness and I'm still picking up awards. I'm just so grateful and I’m thrilled. If you got three years out of being a singer you did really well and surprise, surprise, I'm still here."
Cilla first rose to fame as a chanteuse, notching up a string of hits in the Sixties and Seventies, before switching course by making the move into television. It proved to be a wise choice, because the Liverpool-born star was soon commanding ratings of over 20 million with her show Surprise!, Surprise!. And her next small screen outing was equally successful, because the match-making series Blind Date remained one of ITV's most popular programmes for nearly 20 years.
Fans of the show were left stunned when the presenter announced she was quitting last year. But the Liverpool-born celeb is planning to make a return to the small screen later this month, by fronting a live Christmas special on Living TV. |
