It was an English spring wedding, so naturally there were plenty of broad-brimmed hats and jaunty feathered headpieces – quite a few of them by Philip Treacy, who designed the bride's - at Saturday's royal nuptials. Not just among the guests, either, but also perched on the heads of well-wishers in the streets and inside the grounds of Windsor Castle, where a festive spirit prevailed.

The palette of colours was also attuned to spring, with pastel shades - pinks and purples, and the Queen's pale primrose - creating a fresh and cheerful impression. However, several of the younger royals went for more flamboyant fashion statements, most noticeably Zara Phillips, who opted for a swirly striped number in turquoise, black and white.

Zara's cousins, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, were both in Prada; Beatrice choosing a neat, tawny coat over a fuchsia dress, and Eugenie sporting extreme sophistication in navy and white. Their mother, Sarah Ferguson, was not invited to the wedding; the girls were accompanying their father the Duke of York.

Sophie Wessex wore one of her trademark asymmetrical hats, this time a grey snakeskin effect which topped a tailored white coat. And Lady Sarah Chatto was pure elegance in a pearl-grey suit with shawl collar, a silver-grey hat, and pearl jewellery.
