Ewan McGregor has come a long way since he finished his last big film. Indeed the Scottish heart-throb has travelled a staggering 20,000 miles on his BMW motorcycle across some of the toughest landscapes known to man.

Over the past three months he and his friend Charlie Boorman have journeyed across Europe, Russia, Siberia, Mongolia, Alaska and North America. And the two actors roared into New York on Thursday afternoon as their two-wheeled odyssey came to an end.

Ewan was sporting a shaggy beard after the epic journey, while his travel companion, who was slightly chubby when the adventure began, had noticeably lost weight. Both men admitted to shedding a few tears when they finally arrived in the Big Apple, but they insisted they would do it all again in a flash.

"It feels amazing. If we had to do another 20,000 miles tomorrow I would do it," said Ewan. "It's been the most amazing journey and experience and it's unbelievable that we've finished."

The two men, who received survival training from the SAS before setting off, have faced some tough challenges along the road. Ewan crashed his motorcycle into a swollen river in Mongolia, before being hit from behind at 50 miles an hour in Canada. "There were no roads in Mongolia, just gravel," explained Charlie. "One day we rode 14 hours and went 30 miles. But we plowed on and I'm glad we did."

The intrepid pair have recorded their adventures for a documentary entitled Long Way Round which will be shown on Sky One in October.
