Sporty royal Zara Phillips and her boyfriend Mike Tindall kicked off a series of spring fixtures by spending a day at Cheltenham races.

Zara, 24, has recently given up her job promoting the course's racing festival, but for the first time she had a horse running at the event. And she was on fine form herself, shortening the odds of an engagement announcement by laughing and joking affectionately with rugby player Mike, 26.

While Cheltenham is a natural setting for equestrienne Zara, who is training to make the British Olympic squad for the Beijing Games in 2008, she and Mike will soon be heading off for the rugby pitches together.

As the newly-appointed patron of Catwalk Trust, a spinal injury charity, Zara is due to attend a glamorous fundraising dinner in New Zealand in June, just before the British Lions rugby team take on the All Blacks. And although he's not expected to make the squad because of a foot injury, Mike will be with Zara at the dinner and accompanying her as she follows the Lions' progress on their subsequent tour.
