Light up the party with sparkling style

28 NOVEMBER 2012 Bonfire Night sparks may have fizzled out, but now it’s time for you to sparkle as the official party season gets well and truly under way. If you want to make sure your holiday style is more firecracker than damp squib, make sure your wardrobe is bang up to date with the latest party trends. Light up the festivities in shimmering sequins, killer heels, jewel brights and high-impact accessories. This is the time of year for show-stopping glamour.

Keep it short with a thigh- skimming cocktail dress teamed with leg-slimming opaque tights and statement heels. Embellishments like feathers, embroidery, sequins and beading will set you apart from the crowd. Or vamp up your Little Black Dress with bright tights, co-ordinating courts and one of this season’s fabulous clutch bags.

This season, celebrate colour with rich gemstone shades like blood red garnet, brilliant sapphire and deep emerald. But to really make an impact, be a scarlet woman in traffic-stopping red. True red is a shade we can all wear but if you’re honey blonde or dark brunette then this is definitely the colour choice for you. Accessorise with metallics and avoid black unless you’re channelling Dennis the Menace.

For a more angelic look, go for a delicate chiffon dress with pretty billowing sleeves and a hemline that floats on the merest whisper of a breeze. Nude legs and simple women’s sandals won’t detract from the movement of the dress and jewellery should be kept to a minimum. Keep your hair loose and tousled to echo the drapes of this ethereal fabric. Alternatively, let the angel fall and bring Heaven down to earth with edgy heels, an armload of bangles and an oversized clutch.

Whatever style you fancy, get the basics right and find a dress shape that suits your frame and creates a perfect silhouette. Add a glittery skinny belt to cinch in a boyish waist and accentuate an hourglass one. Or draw attention to a slender wrist with a gorgeous bracelet and emphasise a glowing décolletage with a sparkling necklace.

Smooth out lumps and bumps with structured underwear that lifts you up and sucks you in and make sure there are no dirty white straps to ruin the effect of anything backless or strapless. Make sure you get the right size. Too tight and you’ll be busting out all over the bubbly. Too big and your dress will bag and gape and make you look bigger than you are. Moreover, you’ll feel uncomfortable and self-conscious when you should be letting your hair down and throwing caution to the wind.
