Thanks to his days as a hunky lifeguard on Baywatch, David Hasselhoff is no stranger to seaborne adventures. But his latest foray into the ocean was a rather more colourful affair, as the actor joined forces with Scarlett Johansson at the premiere of SpongeBob Squarepants: The Movie.

In the new flick, which is a big screen version of the popular children's cartoon, David plays himself. And it sounds as though the 52-year-old, whose daughters are both huge fans of the heroic kitchen sponge, was delighted to be offered a role.

"This SpongeBob thing is bigger than Baywatch or Knight Rider for me," he enthused. "I was like: 'I don't care what it pays - I'll take it.' You don't turn down the chance to be a hero to your kids."

His pretty co-star, who plays Mindy the Mermaid, joined him on the specially-prepared yellow carpet. "Imagine combining the Hasselhoff and the boogie board," she joked. "The coolest thing about being a mermaid would be wearing a seashell bra."

Despite the fact that SpongeBob obviously holds a special place in his heart, David is also working hard on the Knight Rider movie. And the performer is determined his reunion with Kitt, the talking Trans-Am, will be no laughing matter. "I don't want it to be a farce," he said. "I got a draft of the script and it was going too far in that direction, so I had to rein it in. I want the Knight Rider movie to be cool, to do justice to all those fans who grew up with the show."
