Eva Longoria, who was her usual sultry self in a strapless satin number, was eager to show off her new beau, statuesque basketball star Tony Parker. And Felicity Huffman, who plays put-upon homemaker Lynette, was likewise having rather more fun than her small screen persona. The 42-year-old actress and her movie star husband William H Macy struck some playful poses for the photographers who greeted them as they arrived for the event.

Nicolette Sheridan meanwhile played up to her femme fatale image in head-to-toe black and stiletto shoes, while Teri Hatcher presented a more angelic approach with an elegant white ensemble. Also in attendance was flame-haired beauty Marcia Cross, who made the most of her famous locks with a turquoise, ethnic-style top.

The one thing all five of the performers were wearing was a broad smile. And they have plenty of reason to be happy, as their hit series, which continues to dominate the ratings, has just been named Series of the Year by the Television Critics' Association. Indeed Desperate Housewives has become so popular with US TV fans that organisers of the Golden Globes are considering rescheduling the ceremony so it won't clash with the show.
