At the beginning of 1998, British supermodel Stella Tennant announced she was retiring from the world that had made her name, as she was pregnant with her first child. But the lanky aristocrat didn’t leave the scene completely. During her two pregnancies – son Marcel came first, followed by daughter Cecily in 2001 – Stella continued as the face of Burberry, who featured the model in no fewer than eight of its campaigns, in various stages of expectancy.

Though she went into semi-retirement after the birth of her children, Stella, who designs a line of baby knitwear for Burberry, has returned to modelling, shooting Chanel’s spring-summer 2002 campaign, and starring as the face of Max Mara. “Modelling seemed incredibly incompatible (with motherhood) before I had children, but once I started working, I realised it’s a brilliant job to do,” she stated in 2002. “It’s part-time, I don’t have to work if I don’t want to. I have long holidays and it’s not nine to five.”
