Fans of the teen series Dawson's Creek tuned in month after month in the hope that leading lady Katie Holmes would finally sort out her troubled love life. Offscreen things are considerably more upbeat, though, with her publicist revealing she is going out with Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise.
Representatives for the Mission Impossible star have also confirmed the two are an item. They were spotted together this week in Rome, where Tom is due to receive the prestigious David Di Donatello lifetime achievement award on Friday.
It is unclear how the pretty actress and her new beau, who is 16 years her senior, first met. Their publicists have both stressed the romance is still in its early stages, but onlookers were left in little doubt that love was in the air when they were seen walking hand-in-hand through the streets of the Italian capital.
Tom and Katie are both veterans of high-profile relationships. The 42-year-old actor, who broke up with Penelope Cruz last year, was married to Nicole Kidman for over a decade, while his new partner has just ended a five-year engagement to American Pie's Chris Klein.
The 26-year-old first made her name as a small screen star, but she has since garnered critical acclaim for her performances in indie hits like The Gift, Wonderboys and Go. Her biggest role to date will come this summer when she takes the female lead opposite Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman in Batman Begins.
