Styling advice: Braids can cause baldness

Styling advice: Braids can cause baldness

14 MAY 2008

Braiding hair too tightly – or even wearing it continuously in tight pony tails or plaits – can lead to a condition called traction alopecia. When this occurs hair is pulled out so often there's none left to grow back. Damage to the follicle can also make it impossible to grow at all. Try to change your style regularly to give roots a break or, at the least, change the partings and the direction in which hair is braided to reduce pressure on the same follicles.
