BEYONCE AND SHAKIRA ON SIZZLING FORM AT MTV VIDEO AWARDS

1 SEPTEMBER 2006

Pop sirens Beyonce and Shakira both managed to raise the roof when they took to the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday night. The two chart-toppers were obviously intent on proving just how spectacular a live performance can be, as they left jaws hanging open in the Big Apple's Radio City Music Hall.

The former Destiny's Child singer was wearing a full-length trenchcoat when she made her entrance suspended from a mechanical cable above the stage, but she soon discarded her cold weather gear and set temperatures soaring by revealing thigh-high leather boots and a sexy basque. The audience certainly seemed to appreciate her show-stopping antics, as the 24-year-old stunner was treated to a standing ovation after she belted out the last note of her girl power single Ring The Alarm.

And Colombia's favourite chanteuse was on equally sizzling form when her turn came to step into the spotlight. Shakira had obviously taken some inspiration from Bollywood, setting the stage alight as she gave an energetic rendition of Hips Don't Lie with the help of some sari-clad backing dancers.

Those lucky enough to win a ticket for the glitzy event were also treated to performances by Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake. But it wasn't just established stars who were basking in glory, as newcomers Panic! At The Disco managed to scoop the coveted Video of the Year trophy, despite the challenge of big names like Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Among the other famous faces in attendance for the bash were Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, P Diddy and Jennifer Lopez. British singer James Blunt, who took home the gongs for best male video and best cinematography, was meanwhile accompanied by his model girlfriend Petra Nemcova.
