Back to School

Our special issue guest-edited by Giovanna Fletcher

Even though I left school two decades ago something happens when September rolls around and there's a focus on 'back to school'. There's a shift, a feeling of hitting restart and a sudden desire to raid my local WHSmith for new stationery that'll help with my upcoming creativity. I've decided I'm not alone in this feeling, and therefore I was thrilled to be asked to guest-edit this digital issue of HELLO! which is based on that important time of year...

Obviously since becoming a mum the 'Back to School' slogan has become a gentle reminder for me to check the boys still fit in their uniforms and to think about what the term ahead might have in store for us. During this period, I often find myself looking back on my own childhood and reflecting on how I felt in the lead-up to returning to the classroom. In general, I was extremely enthusiastic about going to school, but there were times when that wasn't the case. Many children will be feeling a mixture of emotions at this time of year, and I hope this issue helps to make the transition easier whilst also tackling some big subjects, like bullying with Dr Alex George and Tessy Ojo CBE, and dyslexia with HRH Princess Beatrice.

In an effort to make life a little easier we've asked some amazing contributors to come up with ways to encourage a smooth transition. From Jaime from Cosmic Kids talking about the benefits of mindfulness, Heidi Skudder sharing ideas of how to get back to a good bedtime routine, to Sophie Dahl and Cressida Cowell sharing their most loved children's books, we've included loads of ways for the whole family to reconnect and readjust to the start of a new school year.

I hope you not only find this issue useful and informative, but that you really enjoy it too. Parenting is a tricky thing to navigate but coming together to support each other really can create something wonderful.

In our Back to School digital issue guest-edited by Giovanna Fletcher, we speak to a range of experts and celebrities about school-related topics, from bullying and children's mental health to the importance of 'me time' for parents, plus music, sport, school shopping essentials and recommended reading lists. We also asked stars to share their own childhood memories and their (often chaotic) school run routines, while Princess Beatrice joined us on a call to discuss a cause that is incredibly close to her heart.
