In the offbeat comedy Anger Management, Adam Sandler portrays a mild-mannered man who, after an unusual altercation with airline flight staff, is assigned to a temper tantrum-throwing anger management specialist, played by Jack Nicholson.
Until recently, comedian Adam was best known for his headlining roles in slapstick comedies such as Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy and Big Daddy. But he's making a name for himself as a more mature actor after earning high marks for his performances in recent "grown-up" films, Punch Drunk Love and Anger Management, a Stateside box office hit.
Friends say the anything-for-a-laugh persona he shows on-screen camouflages an actor-producer who is very serious about his craft. "I was in Adam's office 12 hours a day," says Anger Management screenwriter David Dorfman. "He worked non-stop."
That's not to say the star still doesn't go for the giggle. Asked why he lobbied to have three-time Oscar winner Jack Nicholson cast in the comedy, Adam replied: "I said to myself, 'This poor fellow needs a gig'."
Anger Management opens in the UK on June 6.
