Hollywood took over the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday evening, with the world premiere of the latest, and last, Star Wars movie.
Battalions of storm troopers and fights with light sabres set the impressive scene for the red carpet event, which was graced by the likes of Sharon Stone – ultra elegant in pale gold – and Eva Longoria. A £1-million party featuring huge ice sculptures of the sci-fi saga's characters followed the lavish screening.
The most striking effect of the evening, though, was Natalie Portman's hair – or lack of. The 23-year-old staggered onlookers by making her entrance with a shaven head. "After all the crazy hairstyles I had to endure for the (Star Wars) films, it's quite liberating to have no hair," she said of the eye-catching 'do, which is a pre-requisite for her new movie, V For Vendetta.
Her co-stars Hayden Christensen and Samuel Jackson joined her at the premiere, though Ewan MacGregor was unable to make it because he's rehearsing for the West End musical Guys And Dolls.
Director George Lucas said that the latest episode, which is a prequel to the original, reflects events in Iraq, in the same way that the first movie, 30 years ago, was inspired by the Vietnam War. |
