Styling advice: Update your hair – with dressing on the side

Styling advice: Update your hair – with dressing on the side

13 MAY 2008

If you have long hair, pony tails are a great way of giving you an alternative style and keeping hair off your face. These days the preppy, neat, low-slung traditional tail has given way to a kookier sideswept pony that's more flattering and allows you to display a cascade of hair next to your face instead of keeping it hidden at the back. Simply pulling your hair down into a band, however, is severe and unflattering, so you need to inject a little oomph. Start by spritzing volumising spray through (plus mousse if your hair's particularly fine) and rough drying, shaking hair through with hands as you go. Then divide hair over the arch of one eyebrow and take the largest amount to one side, tying it tight enough so that it drapes over the side of the face. It should stay close to the head, but have enough volume from drying so that it doesn't lie flat. Secure at the jawline and shake the tail through with fingers and hairspray so it cascades over the front of the shoulder.
